So why is it, people always call it black? I really like the subtleness of the paint and contrast in colors and parts.

It's not black at all, which is exactly why I chose not to buy a 2014 SCL and went with custom paint instead.

I've always thought of it as a matte purplish metal color. The rest of the parts are blacked out, but it is not a black Raider.

I guess not everybody has the same perception of color.
Back in 1989,I had a car painted dark charcoal metallic.People kept asking me why I chose to paint in green...

BTW I love the color on your SCL

Not sure where you got purple from, I could see brownish but not purple. lol  I like pinstripes and accents of the bike. I've had people walk across a parking lot to get a closer look. When the light shines you cam see how cool it looks.

It's funny how we see things.  I have always seen the brownish hue as well.  If I was going to try to create the color I see in it, I would start with black and add gold.  Very rich color.

For starters when mixing paint you generally don't start with black (unless it fleck) b/c it is the substance of all color. Think of when you go to the paint store, they start with white and add pigment.  If you started with black trying get that color you would use so much other paint you, would end up,with so much paint you wouldn't know what to do with it all.

Just a little FYI, if you ever decide to do your own paint.

It's definately purple. Dull purple.  It's made with red, blue, black, yellow and brown tint.

I see a bit more than just brown, but I can give you that too.  I was very close to deciding to buy one, but I knew it would never feel like my bike if it weren't black, so that's why I did what I did on my third Raider and so glad I did. It's definitely MY bike.
