Strange Engine noise
« on: Oct 20, 2012, 09:08:02 pm »
I did a 7 day trip that totaled 2500 miles on my Raider. I did an oil and spark plug change(Royal Purple)before the trip. The bike was humming along beautifully until the last 10 miles. Where I noticed a strange noise. Which I haven't figured out what it is yet. Now the last two days of the trip it rained the whole day, about 800 miles or so and I was thinking that water must of gotten in somewhere it wasn't suppose to. I oil levels are good. My bike is an 09 and it has 29,780 miles total. I will try to post a video so you can hear the noise.

Any fee back would be appreciated. Thank you

Start up your bike and make sure your headlight is working.  A burnt out headlight changes the load on the charging system making a strange noise from the engine.

All my lights are working and I don't have a any blown fuses and I just replaced my battery today and the noise is still there. I do have a Custom Dynamics tail light but have had it for 3+ years and all the LEDs are still lit and including the turn signals. I also have a fairing with a radio.

I agree, sounds like something changed on the air intake system ;)

I have a BAK. My Raider never had the lifters change never needed them.  I going to put her on my lift and start taking her apart until i fine what that noise is. I keep you posted.

It sounds like the generator issue to me.  Maybe your CD tail light is right on the threshold of underload.  Take your stock tail light and hook it to your accessory lead under the seat and set it next to the bike (this will increase your load on the electrical system)...does the noise change?  If yes...then you are under loading the electrical system.  If no, its not the generator.

The Update is that the engine is off the bike at my friends shop but he has been to busy to start working on it. he is only charging me for parts needed, but it is looking like its the friction Bearing. I will let you know once we open up the engine. I have already been looking for a replacement bike once we fix this problem(It wont be a Raider).  :(

By the way all I ever used on this bike was Royal Purple Oil and changed it every 4000 miles.

urbanlegend - a friction bearing is the same as a main bearing on a car. there are no balls or needles, it only uses oil.

magneto - I use royal purple as well, it could have been as simple as a faulty bearing from the factory, or you might have spun a bearing and jacked it up that way. any updates?
If you cant fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.
