I think so, I use Royal Purple 75w90 synthetic in mine. Do a quick search and youll find out for sure.

From what I understand GL-5 should be better since it can withstand high speed and torque,but GL-4 is only good for moderate speed and torque.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

OK, you are wrong. 

GL-4  (or gear oil rated for GL-4 and GL-5) should be used in the Raider.  GL-5 should not be used because -- well. it's hard to believe -- GL-5 can actually cause premature wear of the kind of materials used in the gears.  GL-5 will literally eat up softer metals like the brass syncros in a gearbox (I know the Raider doesn't have them, that's an example).  Use- GL-5 at your own risk.

Somebody should tell that to my local dealer...When I asked them for gear oil for my Raider's primary drive,they sold me 80W90 GL-5. I told them that the service manual asks for GL-4 only and they told me that what they gave me is what they use.
I shopped around for GL-4 but I can't find the stuff anywhere around here.

I believe their Yamaha brand gear oil is GL5 and also meets GL4 specs, something like that.  That's what I bought.

That's like saying which came first the chicken or the egg. Its all relative. Synthetic is synthetic no matter what brand it is and better than non synthetic. Change it out when needed and move on. No one here has had any problems with any brand or type of oil they chose to use as long as it was changed regularly.

OK, y'all.  I need to correct myself...sorta.  What I said is neither completely correct or incorrect.  I have learned that There is a lot of confusion about gear oils and the API classifications.  It is extremely
common, or normal, for all GL-5 oils to claim they cover the API GL-4 requirements for gear oils. This
is a true statement. Does that make them satisfactory for synchromesh or synchronized transmissions?
NO! They meet the GEAR OIL specifications, not transmission oil specifications.

You can use GL-5 in the Raider.  As I said, it is the synchros that are a problem with GL-5.  Those are in auto transmissions, not in the Raider gearbox.

API GL-5 gear oils can be acceptable for differentials but generally are not recommended for transmissions because a GL-5 gear oil has twice as much Extreme Pressure additive for GL-5 quality gear protection. Even though this EP additive is good for gears it can be aggressive and cause corrosion on the soft yellow metals (brass, copper, bronze) found in the bushings, etc., in manual transmissions.

I feel if Yamaha spec'd a GL4 they must have a reason to do so.
