CHECKING THE REAR BRAKE PADS
The following procedure applies to all of the brake pads.
1. Operate the brake.
2. Check:

Thanks for all the info, guys. I wash the bike fairly frequently (did it this past weekend in fact), so I don't really think there ought to be too much stuff in there. I do, however, live in ABQ, and it can get dusty around here. Guess I'll have to give em a look and see if they're less than

0.8 mm (0.03 in) thick

I'll use my super vision, since I don't have a caliper.

There are no brake indicators to let you know your brakes are getting low.  The fronts can be checked visually while in place.  The back requires loosening a bolt on the back caliper and checking the pads.  It's easy to do. I need to check mine this weekend. I know they're about due and already have replacements for them.

Cleaning your bike regularly (with a hose) helps keep the squeak to a minimum.

Worse case if you can't get rid of the squeak, just get louder pipes.

I've got the Motron Turndowns...do they make em louder than that?  ???

Yeah everything in the manual wants us to go Yamaha. As you said Ares yeah right!

r.borders if you have a Harbor Freight pick yourself up a cheap pair $8.99 I use them to line the belt/axle on the rear as well. Heck this pair is $2.99 http://www.harborfreight.com/6-inch-utility-caliper-7914.html

I know, I know - I need to pick some up. Use em just about every day at work, but haven't gotten around to getting myself a pair.

Anyway, I checked the pads, and they look like they still have about 1/2 cm on them (the front ones, that is...didn't check the back), so I don't think they're worn out. Guess I'll just ignore the squeakiness of it all.

That seems a little thick based on automotive ones I've replaced(I cannot check mine as the bike's sadly covered and stored for winter...)
Regardless, for the fronts I'd just remove them and lube everything since eventually you'll have to do the job anyway so good practice.  Shouldn't take but 1 beer ;)
If they look fine and the squeak is still there they might be that way or glazed.  Sometimes brakes get this way.  Like you said: live with it or replace a little early to try and get rid of.  Main issue is that they are fully functional and you have covered that.  I stretch certain things on my vehicles but brakes and tires aren't one of them!!

I ended up checking mine over the weekend and to my surprise still had a lot of pad on the back brakes. They weren't a whole lot less than the new ones. The pads I have do not have any grooves cut into them to indicate when to replace. These are defiinitely still good though and they're wearing very evenly.
