I did PM WooDog - but there is a problem with my account receiving PM's.  It has always been that way.  Members PM me and it does not appear in my message box.
As far as I know my setting are set for me to receive messages but they don't appear in my box.
So I don't know if WooDog received the PM or not.
WooDog if if you have a connect chime in here...

Did you check to make sure it's not just the brushes that need replacing? I've starter issues twice now. Both times the brushes replacement was the right fix. A lot cheaper than a new starter too.

At first I thought the problem was the starter relay.  But when I replaced the relay the problem continued.  When starting sometimes the relay would just click.  At other times nothing would happen - no noise or anything.  Them I experimented with putting the bike in second gear rolling the bike to get the motor to move.  After doing that I could get the bike to start...  I installed a new battery also so I assume that the problem is the starter.   Any thoughts from more knowing folks?

I was having similar issues. I bought a starter and a relay. Starter got here first - and that fixed it. After replacing it - took the old one apart - magnets inside left loose and were not spaced evenly. Got the new starter in July - so far no regrets.

I know 3 people that have used that Ebay starter, cranks faster than the OEM one IMO....and you can buy 4 of them for the cost of 1 OEM starter.

I recommend also disassembling the starter to check the magnet spacing and the brush set.

I just ordered a new Yamaha OEM starter from Partzilla.com $195 inc tax and shipping.  Said it was in stock, last one.

RonAyers - around the same price it looks like but I didn't verify by going thru the checkout process
YamahaPartsHouse - $188 but out of stock so it would take them a few extra days

Just installed the new Starter that I ordered from Rick's Motorsport.
That thing so far is "Right On".  M y bike has never started so easily!  It reacts like I put a powerful battery in instead of a starter.  I just press the starter button one time and the bike fires up right away without any excess cranking.  But I always thought that my original starter was defective.  I had taken the bike into the dealer but the starter was never replaced.  I even wrote a letter to Yamaha about my starter and talked to them on the phone about it but the dealer told Yamaha that they could not find anything wrong with my starter.

Anyway this replacement is great so far.

Good to know.  I think I need to see if my retired butt can find the money to get one from Rick's.

I don't think Ricks makes starters - they're probably making over 150 bucks for being a middleman to send you a DB starter. ??

I just installed a new oem starter from partzilla and it is amazing how quick and easy it starts now.  $195.

In retrospect, I bet my original starter had a broken magnet for years because it always turned over slowly, like 5-8 engine revolutions when cold.   Today, after not being started for a week it started right up, like 2 cranks.

The needle bearing in my original loomed fine. If I had been able to fix my old starter, I would have added a little grease to the needle bearing before assembly.

The starter showed no signs of moisture intrusion. It is sealed to the engine with an o-ring.  There are two rubber gaskets between the body of the starter and end caps.  There is also an o-ring which goes on the terminal bolt to seal it and the housing.

I would highly recommend not spraying the starter housing too aggressively with a pressure washer because I imagine water could be forced past those sealing points.  Having said that, I generally always wash my bike using standard garden hose sprayer.

2009 with approx 32,000 miles

Thanks to all who provided followup on this way too common issue. Nice to know what differences are noticed with the various starters. So many posts have great questions and replies from people in the know, but then hardly any have the conclusion to know what worked or didnít work. This post is a pleasant exception.

I agree with you on Rick's probably not making the Starters.
When you watch Rick's videos and read his adds it gives you the appearance that he makes them.  But when my Starter from Rick's arrived the receipt that came with it stated that the Starter is from Taiwan.

I have not been on the forum for a while, and am having starting issues with my Raider - again. So thought I'd log on, and right away, another one with problems. The story you wrote RuffRider is almost identical to what I encountered. Start issues since new, dealer would not replace starter, told me it was the battery - which after 2 new batteries in 3 years, decided to get another opinion. The magnets in the starter were for the most part, touching each other on half of the starter, and 2 of the brushes were pretty much gone.
Put a new starter in, and bammm, started like it never did before!
Now, about 1 1/2 years after the new starter install, here we go again. Weak starts, and after it has ran for a while, kinda have to cross my fingers when restarting.
Any ideas why this is occurring again, or am I just unlucky with starters??

It seems that Yamaha Starters just have problems.  I had a Yamaha 1100 Virago which had Starter problems.

I just ordered one from DB Electrical but it used the same part number as if I purchased it through my dealer.  I'm not sure what that means.  They probably all come out of the same factory using Yamaha specs, but that just my speculation.

One of the five magnets failed on mine and it was the one closest to the front cylinder.   I assume my broken magnet was the cause of my poor stater performance but I didnt test anything else.

Curious how many failures were magnets and if it was the one closest to the front cylinder.

OEM and 3 of the 4 the magnets let go. The 1 I could fix I think by replacing the brushes, just never got around to it. ;)

My DB Electrical starter arrived a couple days ago, but I didn't have a chance to install it until today. My Raider would roll over to a spot and stop, there would be so much battery drain from the stalled starter motor that my speedometer would recycle.  The bike would start, but only after it complained about it a bit.  With the new starter, it fires immediately, the cranks are strong and it doesn't sound like I have a dead battery anymore.

I did a "post mortem" on the old starter and found nothing that would point to a problem.  Brushes, commutator, bearings, windings, magnets looked just fine.  It just didn't work well.

Glad yer up and running again. I like my DB starter also. With so many of Yamaha's being bad, I think it's the better choice.

I took my starter apart today and replaced it.   I found out my starter had one stuck bushing that was not allowed it to slide to the motor.  I think this did not help my hard starting.  Just did not crank very well.  So I replaced it with ..... see picture from Ebay.  BETTER PRICE TODAY 11-29-19...Cranks much faster and with more force.  Starts right up every time.  This is the first day so, Like to see after one summer of how it performs.  I also could not get a reading on Insulation Resistance "2".  Also Resistance "1" was out of spec.  So maybe the motor was about shot as well.

I have posted several times about my starter problem. 2nd starter and again will barely turn those jugs over. Took advice of several on this topic and bought a DB Electronics starter for $105 plus tax. Damn. What a difference! And 1/4 the cost of the pos Factory starter!
Anyone want my 2 year old starter to tinker with before I chuck it?

I realize this is a very old thread, but with any luck, it's worth refreshing.
Last week, after not riding my Raider for a few weeks, she started even more laboriously than normal. A 10 minute ride to the gym and an hour workout later and I was left stranded until a jump arrived. I assumed it was my 2.5 year old battery so I ordered another... but after charging the battery fully I haven't had an issue since.

Well... I haven't had an issue meaning she has been starting the same as she always has... so maybe the battery is fine? I remembered reading a few threads about starters going bad, but mine hasn't "gone bad", it's the same it always has. But I figured I would re-read a few threads. This thread in particular stuck out to me because of TRaider_John's post, "My Raider would roll over to a spot and stop, there would be so much battery drain from the stalled starter motor that my speedometer would recycle."

Holy Hell, Batman! That is the EXACT thing my Raider has always done! I just thought she struggled because of the shear size of the jugs! You mean this ISN'T normal?!?

Well, I can always throw the new battery in the bike, or return it an get my $109 back if my current battery is fine. Screw it!

I just ordered the DB electric starter 5 minutes ago for $167, Item #: 410-54268-004. I'm hoping to be able to throw it in the bike this weekend. Man, if this starter tosses those pistons around a lot faster than I've ever seen, I'm going to really regret not doing this sooner.

P.S. I really hope I regret not doing this sooner.

I absolutely will. I keep thinking I'll make my first video sometime soon... hopefully I'll find the time and energy to do it this time so you can see the before and after. Else, I'll explain it via written words.

I just took my baby to my local Yamaha dealership for its 8K service check and oil change. They changed the battery last year as it was about 8yrs old (2012 to 2020) and they found the solenoid was bad, the spark plugs needed changing, and the front fork seals needed to be replaced, (I was the one that pointed them out to the tech as they were rusting from the inside and rust was popping out so yeah I wanted them changed) but if this solenoid last under 5yrs I want a stronger/better one to put in next time. Someone posted a better solenoid here and I can't find the tread. Any make and models on a stronger/better solenoid for our Raiders guys? Thanks in advance.

Anyone know the make and part # for a more powerful Solenoid that works on our Raiders? Thanks
