Title: Raider Stalling Conundrum
Post by: Jim S on Sep 23, 2020, 04:49:43 pm

I have a conundrum as to why my Raider continues to stall at least once during daily outings so I have put together the data, pattern and my speculation that fits whatís happening.  Iíve read a number of your posts on theories and actions taken to mitigate your own issues with Raider stalling. Iíd like your experienced feedback.

Here is my datasheet:

Bike Stats: 11 years old (2009); 27,000 miles; meticulous maintenance throughout

Climate:    (then) Cincinnati (w/4 seasons): 10 years, ride all year
(now) Tampa (usually warm to hot): 1 year

Current State:   de-carbonized with Yamalube Ring-Free (confirmed with camera)
      new plugs
      new oil
      new air filter
      fresh gas
      new battery

Initial Conditions:    Cold engine prior to ride
I opened the air box (under tank) with extra holes to assure enough air available to prevent choking the engine.
                 Always easy startup.

Driving Conditions: usually hit 60 MPH during rides

1. Began happening <1 year after moving to Tampa area.

2. Always seems to happen after stopping at a stoplight after a run in 5th gear (60+ mph).  Iíve never seen it happen as slower speeds.  Usually ~60% of the way to destination. Not earlier.

3. RPM seems to drop below sustainable idle (stall) after coming to a stop (holding in clutch) at stoplight.

4. Starts right back up.  Since it is predictable, I open the throttle a bit while waiting at light during this time. It will stall if I donít due to low RPM.

5. Runs fine afterward and does not stall on way home.  This is a one- or two- time phenomenon before not happening again for the rest of the ride.

Suspects:    Gas quality?
Possible motherboard idle-control issue?  Due to age?
Air filter is very dense. Is it choking the engine?

Your opinions welcome !

Idle Air Controller hanging up?

Does it ever happen on a full tank or only when the tank is low?  It may be the start of fuel pump issues.

Raiders are very opinionated beasts. It's possible she is telling you she wants to go to a different pub located approximately 2/3'rds of the way to your normal drinking hole. :)

IAC or  worn lever or switch bushings which is not that uncommon on Raider (and easy to check), causes engine dying when coming to a stop with lever in.  ECM uses lever imput for throttle control not just for starting.  You can order the brass switch bushing, the lever bushing you cant, I bought the Kuryakyn levers which are much cheaper and nicer than OEM when mine wore out

Have you removed the EXUP valve?

I did. Well, I just unhooked the cables when I installed aftermarket pipes. Thatís all you have to do and it wonít throw a code.

However, my valve wasnít working right, and it was sending false signals to the ECU. So I would have it stall at lights etc.

So I actually removed it and put an emulator on, no issues since.

Do you have a fuel mod, such as the PCV or cobra?  Wiring issues can lead to the situation you described

Have you checked to see what the resistance setting is on your throttle control?  that can lead to stalling issues as well
