Title: side mounted speedo
Post by: marcelmot on Jan 11, 2021, 02:14:23 am
Hello,

Does anyone have a side mounted speedo ?
I'm interested if there is an aftermarket one, that can take all the functions of the stock one ...

Thanks
BR
Marcel

I can't say I've ever seen that on a Raider or any other bike before this.

Wouldn't it get in the way of your knees?

Would it even be useful down there? I really try to keep my eyes on the road and that location seems... distracting?

If you have a speedo in that position, what would you do with the hole in the tank set-up? If you removed the chrome part completely, there is an indentation in the tank that would require work...

The hole would be filled in with his head as he is T-boning a semi while looking at the speedometer.
There is a reason for instrument placement in autos, motorcycles, airplanes and all kinds of shit we use.

Thanks for replies.

I just finished some mods and the next one I'm thinking about is changing the gas tank with a custom one, maybe a hand-made one, but w/o the speedo. I don't like the stock shape of gas tank and also don't like the speedo on the top of the tank.

Regarding safety, I'm aware, and I assume that.

I can't remember who makes it.

That's funny shit right there!!!

Marcel - I hope take all the comments with a grain of salt... ball-busting is a national pass time over here in the states. In reality I know some folks don't use speedometers, but keep them just to remain legal (if they are required in your location). As far as safety goes, I personally think turn signals (that I see many a custom bike without) more important than a speedo.

I remember looking at one of those many, many years ago.  I like it.  I just wonder how many of the features actually work.

Dakota Digital makes it https://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm?ptype=product&product_id=622&category_id=530&mode=prod

Good info for me guys, thanks to all of you.

I could contact Dakota Digital to get more details. I'm also interested in not losing any features that the stock one has, specialy the ones related to engine functionality.
Maybe a project for the next winter time.

Regarding "ball-busting ....", thanks for support, no issue.

Generally, pretty well. The fuel gauge works, but is less precise than the OEM, which sets no high bar, but at least estimates the lower half of the tank. I like the tach. I love having the turn signal indicators up high. I like the gear indicator (probably because I don't ride enough). Being able to calibrate the speedo is nice (at least with initial tire change). Love having it up higher where I don't have to look at my groin to see how fast I'm going. The big drawback is it is digital and with the sun in the right place, it is unreadable. Being able to measure 0-60 times and the like is cute, but certainly not essential.

The big loss on this thing is not having the error codes and indicator. While those are a PITA to access, they have come in handy on my son's pony in making on-the-road repairs. That alone may cause me to revert back to the OEM gauge.

I'm surprised that no one made a system that integrated the dash with all the Dakota features and a GPS, and voice link, and.... Or, how cool would it have been if Yamaha ever finished the HUD?

You guys had me lusting that speedo/tach! I really like the way it looks in the video. But now that I see the price ($689), I just don't think it's in the cards for me.

2'nd life: If you have any pictures of when you had it installed, would love to see them!

The missing error codes is enough for me not to go with it.  Well, and the astronomical price.

Wow! I think I joined after you finished your project. I'll have to read through the whole thing. In my 2 seconds of perusing, I noticed you installed a headlight modualtor... I did the same. I try to turn it off if I'm behind somebody but last summer I was on a road with a lot of potential pull outs... so I didn't turn it off and instead left p-l-e-n-t-y of room between me and the guy ahead of me. The road widened a bit and he pulled over and waved me to stop by his window. He said I should get my electrical looked at because my headlight was flipping out. I thanked him and went on my way... at first a little embarrassed, and then thinking to myself, "Well, that's the point... to have folks notice you." So it worked. :)
