I don't know the timing but Yamaha updated the Raider starter.

I would say it changed after the 2012's came out, mine lags about 50% of the time and I have a 340 CCA battery but as I stated earlier it always starts...  ;)

I'm curious WHY Yamaha replaced my 2013 Raider's starter at no cost and with no hassle AND yet other forum members have had problems???? It seemed pretty much a straight forward Warranty issue. The Gilroy dealership asked for and received authorization..... Problem solved...

Same problem here, plus, every so often, there is a grinding noise. Has done this since new (2011 bought in 2012).
Dealership can't find anything - took out the starter, and on my 3rd battery. Does this when engine is cold, and when it's hot. Just took it in again a month ago, service mgr could not get it to act up.  Picked bike up and when starting it in the parking lot, it did it twice. Almost sounds like metal on metal ...thinking it might be a burr on the starter "gear" or engine flywheel. Anyone else ever hear something like this?

My starter cranked over fine up until a couple of years (40000 miles) ago when it would nearly stall out, found that the field magnets weren't all glued down and got a new one under warranty, it was the updated one that came out in 2012.  Dealer shipped it to me and it doesn't work much better, I knew battery wasn't the issue because I jumped (from my pick-up) straight to starter which didn't help cranking, I got a Scorpion gel battery anyway, it didn't help and didn't last very long.  Out of warranty now but would like to try yet another starter but not at 350 bucks and there are no aftermarket ones available.  My bike always starts but the slow cranking bugs me, sorry but it almost makes me feel a bit better that I am not only one with this problem.

Sounds like you could have a faulty starter clutch.

:agree: , not engaging the flywheel completely sounds like , or the gear is stripped from it happening a couple times...
the starter gear will be softer by design , easier to replace that then the flywheel !
Lean till it grinds , then lean some more ..

      Hey,

I have the same sluggish starter issues, 2009 Raider.... Since I Got the bike with 800 miles.

Has anyone found a high Torque stater replacement?

      Thanks

Wonder if the bikes have a built in compression release or if a manual release could be installed? Searching would probably tell me.

It does and there is a thread about replacing the torque limiter on the starter.

@BUXSTAR   I have the exact same issue...   Sounds like metal on metal when it seizes.   Bike runs fine.     I will pull my starter and check the magnets.   I posted the link to the Yamaha recall page but my bike doesn't show recalls.  I wonder if the Starter was a short term recall?   A dealer didn't know anything.  I will call Yamaha Monday.
@Chrominator   Do you have the link to torque limiter?
