I had a similar problem a few years ago when I bought my 2013 new (the Gilroy dealership was able to get Yamaha to replace the starter at no cost under Warranty) because they found the starter had issues with the 'length' of the brushes causing the drag...I don't know if there were other owners with similar problems or I was the only one???? I've not had a 'drag' in the starting since the replacement....P.S. Maybe I got lucky, but Gilroy Motorcycle Center/Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawa, Honda Dealership aggresively found out what the problem was and got Yamaha to make good on it.... PEACE  :raked:  SAFE

Woodog, I have no idea how much a starter costs.  I just plugged in a number to make the joke.  If I needed a starter, how much should I expect to pay for one?

I would try a different battery first.

My buddy was having this issue.  He replaced the starter, seemed to do a little better for a while, then started doing it again.  This year he purchased a high end lithium battery, and has not had a problem since.

I tried the pricey battery. I still get slow turnovers. I just chalked it up to high compression large motor

I did do as someone suggested an took the starter off an dremeled the connections an bolt bosses with a wire brush an put di-electric grease on all three places. Cant say it helped at all.
