Starter Damper replacement?
« on: Jul 15, 2020, 08:30:57 pm »
Hi,

Anyone have a how to on replacing the damper?

Damper Assy Item #1D7-15560-10-00
   $280.37    1    $280.37

Delayed from Japan for 4-6 weeks!    I have the same problem everyone here seems to talk about with a sloppy, weak turn over.  I had a failed Stator so, I figured it was going to open, might as well change that puppy too.  The monkey in the wrench now is the delay of the damper, so I'll probably put it back together then change it when it comes in.

    No, I don't.
But on a related subject, I was looking at doing that also, but then I replaced the starter and it cranks over like - amazing.
I replaced the battery first - it was probably OK.
I think even those that get an "awesome" battery and it makes it better - a new starter would have fixed it too - and cheaper.
    Just my opinion.

Did you happen to take the starter apart and check for cracked Magnets?

I have heard so many explanations for the sluggish starter.  I'll take mine apart first but you may be right.  others have changed the starter and still did not fix the issue. It was said to be the damper.

The Yamaha starters are a POS - I'd replace the starter first before tearing into anything else (assuming connection terminals are clean and battery is good).

As far as that "damper" - if you have the stator cover off, the damper comes right out.  There is an idler gear that mates to a bearing in the stator cover housing.  I'd take a pic before pulling it out (it just about falls out).

      (corrected)

Yeah, after I changed it, I took it apart - unglued magnets - they were not evenly spaced.
And, yes - I'm sure a starter is not "everybody's" answer.
Not sure where ya were getting the damper from - looks like Partzilla has em - https://www.partzilla.com/product/yamaha/1D7-15560-10-00?ref=e0b836228e3799d06642626ec9a380efdc5b6d31

Yes,  I ha an order in with them and they told me the delivery time... had to get it from Japan.   I canceled my order and will try changing the starter first.

I took the starter out. After opening it up, I must say, it was really in good shape.  The magnets were perfect, very little dust.  So, I cleaned the copper contacts  and dust, put together again.... and wait for it... No difference STILL SUCKS!

Some have said these starters are POS.  Is there a more powerful starter to replace it with?

Hey Ranger Rick,  I called your referral and they said it the same as OEM.    Why do you feel it's more powerful?  Thx

I based that on what another member had posted on here. Found it by using the search box on this forum. I went through 4 starters on my raider by the time i sold it at 94,000 miles. But I never tried any non OEM starters, but some one had posted on here that a aftermarket beefier starter was available
