High Beam Indicator Light
« on: Jun 03, 2021, 11:18:11 am »
I was riding in the rain last week and my High Beam light went out. I don't know if it's the bulb or the wiring. Anyone know how to do a quick diagnosis?
Help! My 30 year old mind is trapped in a 75 year old body.

just to clarify between subject and statement, do you mean high beam (headlight) or just high beam indicator, or both?
There are only 10 types of people, those who can read binary and those who cant.

I'm guessing he means when in High Beam mode he is no longer getting light.  That means you need a new bulb.   You may also get a nasty noise when first starting your Raider if the high beam is on at the time. Nothing to worry about. You're just not drawing enough of a load and it makes that noise for a few moments.

Let's see it was working until you rode in the rain - I'd pull the dash to make sure everything was nice and dry.

Now that I read the subject line again, I am guessing my assumption was wrong and this is just the dash light. Disregard everything I said.

Does the high beam still work? Or is the indicator in the dash the only thing not working.

Apparently the light on Noel's monitor also went out.

Damn, leave out a word and you get crucified.....LOL
I meant to put in the word "Indicator" bulb.
The high beam bulb still works. Only the dash light doesn't.

Have you checked to see if your headlight changes from low to high using the switch - like I said earlier since it was working before you rode in the rain I'd pull the dash to make sure everything was dry under there then go from there.

The indicator bulb gets its power from the same wire that powers the high beam, so we know the switch is good if your high beam works. You could have either a broken wire going to the gauge, or a burnt out LED in the speedo. If you have a voltmeter, test the yellow wire in the white connector for 12V with the high beam on.

The headlight works high and low beams, and switches back and fourth. I tried it again yesterday after the bike was thoroughly dry, and the light still doesn't work, but it is possible that the rain soaked the inside of the gauge cluster and is still wet in there. I will try using my multi-tester on the two wires. Thanks. If the led proves to be the culprit, how hard of a job is it to get the old one out to replace it?

My guess is the indicator is soldiered to the circuit board for the Speedo and would have to be taken off of it. I think the hard thing will be getting a replacement , my guess is also that the bulb is made into the indicator lense. I donít think water got in there , I think the led died for sure
Lean till it grinds , then lean some more ..

I agree that if the LED is bad, water probably had nothing to do with it. Just one of those coincidences.

And I've never looked into replacing a LED in the gauge, so I can't help you there.

Maybe have to look at OEM parts list in speedo compartment to see if there's a replacement bulb.
