New sound at cold start
« on: Aug 28, 2021, 12:31:27 pm »
Hello all,
As time passes, the Raider is getting older and issues tend to appear.
My bike is a 09 18k miles. (bought it last year at about 16k miles)
In my case, when i start the bike it makes a metallic, clinking sound on the right side, where the gearbox is. It tends to go away after the bike warms up.
When i first heard the sound i thought it was the lifters, but its coming from the right Lower side( hope my hearing is good). no error codes, no nothing.
I will try to change the gear oil, since i dunno when it was last changed, but i don t think it will make any difference.
I searched the forum quite a bit, but found only 1 post similar to my issue and the guy was talking about a bearing in the gear box, he didn t post a result to his problem.
Would appreciate the advice if someone encountered a similar issue.

Are you sure it's not electrical?  Check your headlight to make sure it's working. If not, you may not be drawing enough power. It's a freaky sound because I knew about it for years and it scared the piss out of me when it happened to my Raider.

Probably stator growl - makes a sound like the motor is imploding

My 2009 had around 93,000 miles when I sold it. Over the years it made various strange sounds at times, :o but I learned to just considered it normal ;) on mine the engine was bullet proof, the electronics not so much :(

When you say right side do you mean the exhaust side?

      Hey,
It s not stator growl, that makes a particular sound. Lights are working properly, i use normal bulb, not led or anything else. The sound is located above the exup valve and from what i can hear it s coming form the geabox. I will post a video later to see it s more clear.
Big engine, lots of sounds, but when a new one appears can t stay chill.
      Thanx for your answers.

There's nothing moving inside the transfer gear unit when the bike is stopped. Like Todd (Fiddles) said check the EXUP valve. You could have a broken cable, or too much play in the cables, causing the valve to flutter.

Personally, my money is on bad lifters. My 08 was fine, but my 09 had lifter issues at 16k miles. Yamaha got a bad batch of lifters for the 09 production year. Not every Raider was afflicted, but you could be one of the lucky ones like I was
I'd rather die on a motorcycle than live without one.

I know about the lifter issue, but from what i have read that happens at lower milage, around 5k. I' ll take it to the mechanic and see whats going on with it.
I also found a post for lifter alternatives on this forum. What would your suggestion be, go for the alternatives or buy the original ones?

Post a video with the sound.

Yamaha changed suppliers in 09 and got bad lifters they changed suppliers - first you need to know exactly what the issue is - if may not be lifters - but I'd go back with OEM.

Managed to record a video, you can hear the noise clearly.
Now it smells like exhaust gas form the engine, i changed the plugs a month ago, maybe i didn t tighten it...
@Roadkill, lifter issue it`s more and more clear as the sound goes.

I, ll be a little plastic and say that the clack clack ,clinking metallic sound wasn t there before, it started like a week ago. I hope i m not chasing ghosts, but when you get used to the sound of an engine, a different new sound will pop up right away.

I got the volume up as high as it will go and didn't hear anything either but when he moved the camera closer to the from I thought I could hear the stator - nothing in the gear box is moving when the bike is sitting still
