Wires for starter and batteries/Flamewires
« on: Sep 30, 2021, 04:18:08 pm »
Hello,

I have read that there are wires with a larger diameter available, and I am thinking making some wires myself. I have got some pretty good wires with about 5 AWG, and I could solder some plugs on it.

I am curious if somebody has installed these wires?
- What is the AWG of the normal wires, for the starter and the batteries?
- The cable of the starter, is this the mass/negative cable? I think this is the positive wire but I am not sure as it is black.
- is it tricky to change these wires?

Currently I try to improve the battery-perfomance. I don't have real problems yet, but starting sound a bit tired. After some pulse charging the voltage in fully charged condition slowly gets better, and I have the impression starting improved a little bit.

many thanks,
Florian

First thing you should do is have the battery tested - I had one that would show fully charged but turned out to have a dead cell

Thank you for your reply. The battery is ok now, the starting sounds a bit more "alive" now, difficult to describe. I am surprised that the pulsing helped. When I saw the bike the first time at the shop, the battery was dead. I am not sure if this is a new battery, probably they took just a used battery that was available. I want to avoid buying a new one, and I would like to support the battery with proper wires with some larger AWG.

Yep those inspired me, but I want to make some by myself. I have some h01 n2 wires with about 5 AWG, what is the diameter of the original wires? Did someone do this mod? Thatís a mod I might do during winter.

I put the set of MaxAir wires on my bike. Just FYI, running the starter wire is a royal pain in the a$$.

Like anything, the first time you do it, it takes ages and is frustrating.  The second time on another Raider, it's easier... Patience my friend  ;D :raider:

I zip tied the new starter cable to the old one and pulled it through. The pain in the ass was getting to the existing zip ties from factory and disconnecting them. The ones behind the engine.

Thank you for the feedback. Did you take off the side covers? The other day I removed the screws of the side covers but I couldn't get them off.
Or did you remove something else, like removing the plastic tray with the battery? I am pretty sure I will get new wires.

The side cover on the gear shifter side. In behind there is where the pain in the ass zip ties are.

You have to pull out on the side cover. It is also held on by a post that goes into a rubber gromet.

Does somebody still have the old, replaced cable and can tell me the length? I think I order a crimped cable.
      many thanks, flo
